Christmas 2011 at Children of Zion Village

Christmas was a joyful day of celebrating the most Holy Birth – Jesus Christ.

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2: 11-14

It was an early start to the day to get the puppies fed, children ready and cooking done for breakfast. I made a casserole and fresh warm biscuits and also had juice for all of us for breakfast. We ate at the children’s home.

After breakfast was Christmas songs and our Christmas church service celebration.

After church it was back to the house to cook some more. We had all of the children and volunteers for lunch at our house. What did we have you ask? It is what we have a lot in Africa: chicken, rice, gravy and gem squash. For desert, Margaret made a yummy lemon pie. The boys enjoyed the food and we enjoyed taking pictures of the girls (and puppies too!) :) Too cute!

And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6b

Christmas Eve Boat Ride

It has been a hot week in Africa. On Christmas Eve we fired up the boat and took it for a ride around the island that is right across from our house. We can still see the island since the river is not yet flooding. All the children that are still here in the village went except for the baby girls.

It ended up being a mini safari. We saw Hippos, a crocodile, fish eagles and monkeys.

African Wedding

Well, we have been to many funerals in Africa but we had never been to a wedding. So, on Dec 20 we managed to get a wedding invite. Now, there are several phases to a wedding in Africa. I do not understand all of them. So, let me see if I can tell you a few things and hopefully it is accurate information.

At first the elders meet from both sides. The bride to be comes but is not allowed out of the car until the groom pays. It can be any fee that is ask. It might be N$10, N$50, N$100 or even cattle. Once this payment is made she can come out. This is called a “kitchen party”. They eat, set a wedding date and give advise.

The next can be 3, 2 or one phase. If it is 3, the first is eating and giving advise. The next is the wedding and it would be in a church followed by food. They have a line of cars driving all around town with balloons and honking horns. Many are in the backs of pickups so you can see what colors they are wearing. We have seen bright pink and white (for both the men and women), purple and black, red, white and black (this one was one Christmas eve day) and turquoise and black. The men’s shirts will be whatever bright color the sashes for the ladies dresses are.

Day three is the traditional African day. They celebrate in the village with more advise, more food and dancing. This is the day that we attended. To get to the village, we walked across the bush, then rode in the macolo (dug out canoe) and walked some more. I wore the traditional skirt and head wrap and, well, men can wear whatever.

We sat under tents with the ladies in the back sitting on the ground on mats and the men in front in chairs!!

Christmas giving in the Villages

We took our boys to 4 villages to give the gift of traditional Mealie Meal (pap). We are living on the land that is owned by the village and the old Induna (chiefs) appreciate the relationship of knowing what is going on here and knowing the children. They are also involved in instructing the children in the African way (one that we are still learning each day). We try to pay our respect by working with them, learning from them and helping them when we are able. At this Christmas time, this was a small gift of appreciation for their acceptance and friendship.

And, we only got stuck in the mud 2 times! Praise GOD!!!

We are blessed by your contributions to be able to travel to a nearby feeding center and take food for children that are orphaned or vulnerable but do not have the privilege to be living at Children of Zion. It is only because God placed this on your heart that we have funding to give back to this community. On Dec 19 we went with our volunteers and the few children that are still staying at Zion and went to celebrate Christmas with the children and volunteers at Mafuta. We took chicken, macaroni, rice and cabbage. The meal was blessed and the day was amazing. Also, many of you have sent beanie babies. We had enough to give 70 children, 10 staff and left 24 for the pre-school. WOW! God is GOOD! We even had some donations of books from Real Way Down when they were here. We were able to give to the pre-school. Bridgett said that books were her prayer for the school and she was dancing praises!

We shared about the meaning of Christmas and the meaning of Christ’s love and that each one of us is special and there is a special plan for our lives when we listen, obey and follow Jesus. We prayed, sang ate and even had a little soccer going in the road.

Our 4 boys that went were able to give back to the community as they served these children and played games with them. A lesson on giving is priceless. The blessing of giving is priceless. Merry Christmas Mafuta!!

COZV Staff Christmas Party 14 Dec 2011

Christmas celebrations are different in Africa but still fun. As far as we have seen, there is nothing to do with red and green. But we all know that if you go Christmas in the states, you wear red and green. It is really just as well because we don’t really have red and green here to wear, so we just wear what we have. For the men, anything goes. For the women, they tend to dress up a bit. Some in shatangis, some in traditional African suits, some in black pants or jeans. We bought some nice African print material for the table cloth this year. It did have red in it :) The music was traditional African dancing music – nothing Christmas was played but everyone danced and had a great time (even the little girls!) To eat we had chicken on the braii, potato salad and macaroni salad. Lorna baked many cookies again so those were enjoyed by all and disappeared VERY quickly.

Gifts and thanks were given to the staff. This year there were personalized gifts and the ladies thought they should model their new aprons included with COZV patch and their own name!

Spiritual and Team Building Retreat for COZV staff

On Tuesday Dec 13 we had a spiritual and team building retreat for the COZV staff. This is the first of many. God really blessed us and many of those that participated gave us great feedback and have requested that we do it more. Our volunteers helped us to make agape for each person attending. We had hearts with 1Peter 1:22 “Love one another from the heart.” We had hands that had Galatians 5:13 “Serve one another in love.” and we had crosses with either “pray”, “believe”, or “faith” on them. We had T-shirts that were a donation from one of our friends in the states that is a cross with Christ hanging on it and it says “think about it.” Many of them wore the shirt the next day to the staff Christmas Party. We had some team building activities that we did when we were in missionary training. We talked about who God wants us to be and giving up our burdens at the foot of the cross. The guys stripped the wood from tree limbs and made a cross for the event that is still standing in the children’s home. It was a special day that was blessed by God and given to us from God. We pray that they will remember just some of the things that were discussed and that we become a closer community in the spirit of Christ’s love.

Home for the holidays for our children

It becomes a bit quiet here at Zion as the children go to their villages with family for the holidays. It is a mixture of emotions for them I think. They get excited about going but then they get scared when the time comes. Some shed a few tears at the initial drop off (especially the younger ones) but they all seem to enjoy their visit and also coming back at Zion. The drive is long and it takes us 2 days to get them all dropped off. The first day was to the far western Caprivi and we were on the road for 12.5 hours. We even packed all of the luggage in the trailer or it would have been a 3 day event. It also rained most of the drive. The second day we split the drive with the volunteers and we were all back in about 6 hours. There are still 7 children here – the 3 youngest plus a few of the older boys. We will look forward to having Christmas day with our small family here.

It’s Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas

Many joined in to bring the Christmas tree to “"life”. The lights were carefully placed, and the Merry Christmas banner hung. We called each child’s name to come get their ornaments and hang them carefully where ever on the tree they wanted.

Several days later, we made our house look a bit like Christmas. With our little tree and the manger scene that Lorna’s father made and our elephants with hats and giraffes with wreaths, we are feeling a little more like Christmas. The ladies (Margaret, Laura and Lorna) even dressed the part.

End of School Celebration

Thursday, December 8th marked the end of the school and a big celebration except for the closing devotions that were done by Travis and Lorna on Friday morning

What a wonderful day. This year was bigger and better than last year. We transported all of our learners and staff into town to LA town hall where we had our celebration. We were so proud of our learners. They sang, danced, had a couple of dramas and collected their awards. Even the little children did a wonderful job performing. There were several invited guests that also attended. We had about 12 people at the high table and they also participated in the celebration.

After a full morning of celebration we transported several car loads back to the village through the now muddy road for a wonderful lunch. We got a cow leg and it was on the braai cooking and was served with pap and soup for gravy. Back to holiday baking so that we could finish with a couple of home baked cookies. Yummmm…

Our Dog Scarlet

Scarlet has left behind 2 beautiful puppies, a girl and a boy. The girl was born 4 days after the boy and she was tiny. Well, now, she about 3 times his size. They are being bottle fed and keeping us all busy. Scarlet delivered a total of 10 puppies and I am not sure what we would do if we had to feed 10 of them. Keeping up with 2 is enough.

Scarlet had a very tough time with all of the deliveries but then something terrible happened. She had fluid build up in her abdomen such that she could hardly breath. They did surgery on her and she came home to lay on our kitchen floor. The vet came every day to give her a couple of drips. The fluid built up all over again and she would not eat, drink or even pick her head up. We all tried and Scarlet tried but she just could not pull it out. We miss her a lot as she was a wonderful companion but we are thankful for the short 14 months we had with her and for her 2 beautiful, now spoiled, house puppies.

Well it has been a tough couple of days here for scarlet (the dog). She went into labor Saturday night and the first puppy got stuck. So, she worked and worked for we don’t know how many hours but by morning she was exhausted and she did not even have the first puppy pushed through. To make a long story short, we worked with her the whole day but we had to call the vet because she was just too tired to deliver. Out of 6 puppies only one was alive. There are still more puppies in her and it is Monday night. Too much time has passed so, we must take her for surgery to get the rest of them out tomorrow. Poor Scarlet. So much milk and so much work and only one puppy to show.

She made a nice home under the top of the car that was laying on the ground. At one point we had to use it as the surgery table. So was NOT so happy about that but we put her back in the hole she dug and put her roof back on. It was good there was a roof because it rained today and they were cold.

Prayers for Scarlet and the puppy please.

UPDATE! Since I could not get this to post on Monday when I wrote it there is an update. Scarlet delivered two more puppies on her own (well with some help here but not from surgery). One, a girl, alive and one dead. That was Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Last night (Tuesday) she had another dead puppy. Not sure if there is one more or not. Scarlet is not looking so good now and she is not eating. The 2 puppies seem to be doing well but we have to carry them to Scarlet because today she is not going to them. What’s next???? Not sure…. One day at a time, one hour at a time, one moment at a time.

Thanksgiving and Birthday at COZV

In ALL things GIVE THANKS!!! So in Namibia, they do not celebrate Thanksgiving as we do in the states. But, thanksgiving should be every day so, it was another day at Zion and another day to be thankful. God has been and continues to be GOOD! We had many errands to accomplish that day. So many that Lorna had to get the volunteer, Laura, to fill in for her at the school (since she usually teaches there on Tues and Thurs mornings).

I know that you are all wondering what we had to eat. Well, it was a nice meal of chicken (actually we could have bought a turkey but they were so expensive that we opted for the cheaper version – chicken), corn on the cob, potato wedges and garlic rolls. We don’t have pumpkins yet in the garden but when we do, we will catch up on the pumpkin pie :) We enjoyed dinner and the evening with our friends and volunteers from Australia and Laura from the states.

Travis celebrated his birthday in style on Friday. I ask the ladies to sing a song because they just have beautiful voices. Well, they gave him a CONCERT! It was wonderful. I made chocolate (of course) cupcakes and we all enjoyed them. Then the children made cards and gave them to Travis later in the day.

Since it was Friday (our typical date night) we went out to dinner. He was celebrated there with the owner and her daughter and a big piece of carrot cake and a big candle. God Blessed Travis on his special day! Thank you all for the many greetings that came on facebook and email and even snail mail!!

Coming home from Camp:

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Last week I wrote that we took the 8-12 year old children to a Christian camp for the weekend. Well, today in our church at Zion, they presented what they learned. It was awesome! The scripture base is 2 Chronicles 7:14 above. They all could had the scripture memorized and said it in front of everyone, one by one.

They also made bracelets with the colors on and described what each color means. Gold is the road to heaven, black is sin, red is the blood of Christ, white is forgiveness from sin, blue is baptism, green is growing in faith. They can all tell you what each one means.

They did a drama where there is a bench with a sign that says SIN, DO NOT TOUCH. Well, the person touches it. Then the witchdoctor comes along and says that she can free him but she too becomes stuck. Then the strong man comes and says he can free them for he is powerful but he too becomes stuck. Then the police man comes and says she can free them but she too becomes stuck and on and on. It was not until the Christian came with her Bible to tell of the love of Christ that one became free. Then that person went to tell the next and he became free. Then that person went to tell another and she became free. One by one they were all free because of the love and power of Jesus Christ, not by their own power.

We cannot be free with our own power but only by the love of God can we be free.

We then had the pleasure of hearing them sing. WOW! Want a joyful noise unto the Lord!

A special thank you goes out to Mark, the missionary in Namibia and the team from Pennsylvania that led the camp! Our children were blessed and we were blessed from them! God is working BIG in Namibia!

There is a team here from Pennsylvania and they are working with a missionary that is living on the coast (yes far from us). They have been traveling a bit through Katima and visiting villages and having fun spreading the word of God. We met the missionary one evening and he told us about a camp they were going to be doing here in November. Then on Thursday he called and ask if the team could visit on Friday afternoon. We were excited to have them. They sang some songs with the children, put on a couple of skits, played a bit of volley ball and made some balloon art. It was a wonderful time.

They also put together a camp here in Katima Mulilo. We had the opportunity to register our small ones ages 8-12. That included 11 of our children. So, last evening we dropped our children at camp for the weekend. We are excited about how God will work through this team and minister to about 60 children total.

Since the 3 that are about 6 years old were a bit lonely and disappointed as their friends packed to go camping, we took them to town today. They looked and things and wanted to buy most everything (even an umbrella because it is so hot) but they ended up with and enjoyable ice cream cone!

Happy Anniversary to us as we celebrated ice cream with them.

Day of the Namibian Child Sept. 28, 2011

It was an excited day on Wednesday Sept 28 which is the celebration of The Day of the Namibian Child. This is a day to bring attention to children in Namibia that are in need because of 3 major areas: poverty, child rape and child abandonment.

On Friday afternoon we had unexpected visitors from the Ministry of Gender. They were coming to invite the children from the Zion Mission School to perform at the cultural event. Well, this was short notice but it gave them Monday and Tuesday to prepare and we were all excited. The children have never performed at the stadium before so this is a first!!! We crowded about 30 children in the 2 vehicles that we have and headed to town at 8 in the morning. They were dressed in their school uniform and shared emotions of excitement and a bit of nervousness.

A marching “band” went through the town and entered the Sports Complex to kick of the event. The marching band consists of 2 drums, one set of cymbals, two “horns”, a drum major and marching girls that wear a white glove and carry a stick that they use as part of the performance. We actually never heard the cymbals but they were there.

There were several young kindergarten groups that performed. Very cute!

Then, STARING, Children of Zion Mission School Choir!!!!!!!!!! Hip Hip Hooray!!!!!!!!!!

The event ended with refreshments for the performers that included a sausage sandwich, small bag of chips and a can of soda.

We were proud of our children. They demonstrated good behavior and had a great performance and we all had a wonderful time.

Energy and activity at the Epiphany Transition Home

God has blessed the children with a transition home where the oldest one move and learn how to function and live more independently. This home was built a couple of years ago but finding the right national couple to be the house parents was difficult. Finally, we felt that God was calling one of our current staff and his wife to be the house parents. We were so excited when they accepted the challenge on a “trial” basis.

So, when the Epiphany team was here from Epiphany UMC in Ohio, they (along side some of our children)finished painting the outside and started cleaning the grounds around the home. We shifted furniture that we could to start out. We purchased some basics. AND, last weekend, the 12 older children moved. Now, this house is not very far. It is a short walking distance (almost like us walking from our house to the children’s home). It is outside the gate that leads into the property.

They are gathering fire wood and cooking their own 3 meals outside over the fire on their own. They are doing their own laundry by hand (which they have been doing), they are cleaning and trying to keep their rooms neat (at neat as teenagers think they need to be) and also attending school that starts at 7am and attending church with us at Zion on Sundays (as before). So far, they are enjoying the new parts of their adventure.

They seem to think that it is too quite without an additional 8 people in their room (there is now 2 per room with 6 boys and 6 girls total) and there has been a lot of foot traffic up and down the road to see each other and determine who is eating the best meal (which is most important of course). They will be starting their own garden plot and having Bible studies with the house parents along with learning how to budget and purchase what they need.

Now that one of the puppies is back with the house parents, our dogs have totally abandoned us:( They just stay at that side and we hardly see them. Traders!!

We thank God that these older children will be more prepared to go into the world and be successful. With this learning time and God’s help, they will be good Namibian citizens that will hopefully bring others to know and love the Lord!!!

Support to the Rice Project

We “happened upon” a rice project one day when we ventured to a nearby lodge. We stopped in to ask about the rice and prices. It started in 2009 and provide jobs for some ladies. Based on the cheap price of the rice compared to the grocery store and what we pay for the rice for the children, we decided to try it. So, we bought a 50kg bag to start The only difference when cooking is that you have to wash it. Now, when you look at the water, you kind of worry about eating it but you just keep washing it and let it sit for a while in warm water and it is DELICIOUS!!!!! It is now my favorite thing to have!

So to share with you, here are some pictures of the wonderful ladies that are sorting the rice. They are blessed to have this place of employment and we will pray for them and the success of the project.

When you come to visit us in Africa, we will also let you taste the rice and give your own opinion!

HERO’S DAY in the Caprivi Strip

Today we took several of our children to the sports complex for a Hero’s Day Celebration. It included speeches about being proud of who you are and where you are from and what you can do to STOP HIV AIDS here since it is one of the largest populations. It included many traditional dance groups which is always fun to watch. Enjoy just a few of our pictures below.

Mudding a traditional African House

When I came to Africa, I kept saying that I was going to help to build a traditional mud hut. Well, my “dream” has come true and I have participated in all 3 layers. First, the men go and get thick bush poles that make the frame of the house. After those are securely in the ground, they get smaller “sticks” that they tie together either with wire or twine. We tried to get old tires so they could take the wire out and use it but we ended up with twine. This makes the entire frame of the house. Zinc is used for the roof (in this case). Sometimes they use reeds.

Now the ladies (the frames is the job for the men and the mud is the job for the ladies) are ready for the mud. We start by getting dirt, mix with water, almost like mixing meat loaf (which I hate to do by the way) until it is rather smooth. You just squish it through your fingers and hope that you do not run into any glass. You add water until you get the right thick consistency to make a big “dough” ball. Then you place in in-between the small wooden frame pieces. My friends from Children’s Healthcare will never believe I had my hands in this!! Good Occupational Therapy, right?

Eventually the house looks like this. Outside, inside. And your hands and your friends hands look like this!

After this dries a day then we started layer 2. This is a bit more fun as you can throw the mud on and it is not as thick as the first balls of mud were. You throw it and smooth it out. This is called “plastering” the house and it covers up all of the sticks.

For the last layer, the men bring dirt from the huge termite mounds. This is also mixed smooth with water. This is called “washing” the house. Literally, you wash it all over the house. This termite dirt waterproofs the house!! Amazing!! Everything is done by hand.

Now we are ready to have the first lunch in the house After cooking pap and fish and fresh greens from the garden in tin cans over the fire, we sat on the floor and had a great lunch. Plates and silverware? Never!!!

I want to thank my village friends for being great teachers and sharing in laughing and loving. We really did have a great time!

And the house?? It’s beautiful!!!!

Kim spent 2 months at COZV serving the Lord and blessing us and the children and staff. She taught the kindergarten and worked in the med room, played with and loved on the babies, helped the kitchen staff and the love of the Lord showed through her everywhere she went and in everything she did!! She is already planned to come back so we are looking forward to that day. Thank You Kim!!

Rick is a member of the COZV board and he was here to get a better understanding of our school and the government schools in Namibia. When he was here we were short teachers so he jumped right in and filled an empty spot and was a huge blessing. Mt Zion also sent Bibles to all that turned 18. Rich presented them to the children in a special part of the Sunday morning church service. We also visited the local chief and his family. Since we typically stay with Rick and his wife when we visit Mt Zion in Maryland, it was great to see him and catch up a bit on what is happening in the States. Thank you Rich for your service and blessing to the staff, children and us!

Jim, our “old” home pastor made a quick visit through and brought goodies and encouragement and blessings. He had just attended a conference and could not leave without coming by to “check on us.” It is always great to see pastor Jim and we are thankful that he took the time to come. He was discouraged because our goodies were in his luggage, which did not make it. But, thank the Lord, it came into the airport just as he was leaving so we got our packages and are very grateful!! Thank You Jim!!!

Nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:39

Schuylkill Haven Team brings blessings to us and the ministry here!

The team from Schuylkill Haven was here about 2 weeks but they made a life long impact! It was obvious when they stepped foot here that they were here to serve. And service was what they did! They were here to serve in the ministry at Zion, at Mafuta, for us and most importantly, for the Lord!

They finished the soak away digging behind the Epiphany house and also finished the outside painting of the Epiphany house.

They served at Mafuta feeding center, did medical exams for children and staff, provided hygiene kits and some other needed supplies for the pre-school and played with the little ones.

Jo-Ann blessed Travis and I by sewing us curtains for our home. It turned the fish bowl house into a warm home and we think of her and the team every time we enter!

They also took the donated paint that was given to us by a church family from South Africa and gave some of the children’s rooms a much needed face lift. Amazingly they painted around all of the scripture verses with a Q-tip because we didn’t have small brushes!

They had a big birthday party for all the kids at zion and provided blankets and small teddy bears as gifts. After the party we all enjoys sports, games and crafts.

Star Athletes travel to Windhoek!!!

No surprise that our kids did very well at the national tryouts to be chosen for the select team that would represent the region in Windhoek this past weekend.

The girls that were selected for soccer were: Nicky, Della, Anna, Lisedi, Mona and Vivian (daughter to one of our staff). BAD NEWS here is that Windhoek did not have a girls soccer team to play so our girls were picked and then were not able to go They will have other opportunities and we are proud of them for training hard and being selected. Zion certainly has excellent soccer teams.

For Basketball, Naomi and Mateo were selected and traveled to Windhoek.

For Boys soccer, Goty and Martin were selected.

The team of 4 did a great job. They made it to the second round and they have always been knocked out in the first round in the past. Martin scored the winning goal for the team!!! Everyone had a great time and all are home safely. We praise GOD and give HIM the GLORY FOR ALL THINGS!!!!

Epiphany Team and Jimmy Riggs

I know that we are delayed in our blog but we have had a lot of guests and have been busy and sick some of the time. So, hopefully we can start to catch you up a bit but if some sounds like a repeat it is because highlights were in the June newsletter.

Jimmy Riggs served here from June 6 until July 6. He used to attend Epiphany UMC in Md. so he knew the two pastors that came with the youth team when they arrived on June 22. They stayed until July 4. From left to right below: Tyler, Olivia, Pastor Scott, Noah, Natalie, Josie and Pastor Lisa. Jimmy Riggs with Josiah in the middle picture.

They (including Jimmy) accomplished a lot of hard work while they were here including digging some of the soak away for the Epiphany Transition Home, and clearing around the home and painting most of the outside of the Epiphany home along side of our kids. They did some manure runs (this was Jimmy’s favorite!), participated in the COZV talent show, and prepared the Sunday worship service and communion.

They led the dedication ceremony for the Epiphany home. The dedication was followed by traditional dancing and a delicious braii.

I almost forgot that a big hit for the small children was new pajamas. Especially since it is winter and the nights are cold!

Praise God for Epiphany UMC, the team and Jimmy Riggs!!!! We miss you.

June 30th was a sad day at ZION

Auntie Lena spent 6 months at Zion and left a lot of foot prints on everyone’s hearts. On Thursday June 30th she began her journey back to the US and then she will head on home to Germany. She will be married to Johannes (another volunteer who spent several weeks here at Zion) on August 13th.

Lena was a clown. She made many laugh. She taught the kindergarten class while she was here and I am sure those little kids will remember her for what they learned and the good times they had. She worked in the med room and even taught a first aide class to the staff. Lena spent a lot of time with the staff and they grew to love and care for her.

Lena certainly blessed our lives. She was flexible and did what ever she was ask to do without any complaint. She would even thank us for asking her to do any task. We became “mom and dad” to her and that made us smile We know her “real parents” and her heavenly Father are proud of her and her service at Children of Zion and service to the Lord.

God willing, maybe she and Johannes will return again some day.

Thank you Auntie Lena and God Bless you and Johannes in your marriage and new life together!

COZV Race Around the World

A HUGE THANK YOU to Courtney West for organizing the COZV Race Around the World that was held Saturday June 18th. Also a HUGE THANK YOU to ALL who helped, participated and donated/pledged toward one of our kids. Thank you to all of the racers around the world that supported us here in Africa!

The race started here in Namibia. We were again blessed with friends that provided a HUGE TRUCK to take ALL of our children to the sports stadium!! They actually needed a ladder to get into the truck. WOW!! That was so awesome and such a blessing not to have to take many, many trips to and from the stadium to get all of our kids and staff and volunteers there. THANK YOU MARIANNE AND MICHAEL!!! The babies and some of the staff went in the car with us.

Once we got to the sports stadium we lined up for the start of the race. We were walking/running a LONG track. The track here is longer than the typical US 1/4 mile track. It is about 400 meters so our kids really went longer than what you might calculate when you count laps. We did have a small candy incentive for each lap

Some ran, some walked, some were carried. We took music and turned it up loud! Everyone had a great time.

After the big race/run/walk/carry, we came back to the village for a traditional braii and traditional dancing. It was a great day and we really appreciate all of you that participated in any way!! Thank you always for your prayers financial support. The kids are here because YOU CARE!! God is so Good and we give HIM all of the praise and Thanks!!!

Sports–Friendly?

We walked to a friendly sports match on Wednesday. It was over the bush and through the water The first water was below the knee but the last water was above the knee, especially for us short people! The girls played net ball and won. One of our girls got injured and we think she has a hamstring pull. She was lucky there are 2 strong men – Travis and Jimmy – to carry her some of the way back. They were also blessed that one of our friends in the village offered a macolo ride so they rode in the dug out canoe most of the way. The rest of us walked the distance. The boys played soccer and they ended in a 3 –3 draw. They played great as usual. The cheering squad on the side had a wonderful time dancing and chanting! A fun time for all!! Even the dogs (not Lydia as she stayed with her pups) escorted us and were with us the whole time.

BABIES X 9 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I guess you might say we are grandparents! NINE BABIES!!! Congratulations Lydia!!! Now, let us tell you that her puppies (the older ones) are only 8 months old! Now she has 9 new ones to take care of. Birthday Friday June 10. Where? Born on the river bank in a nice dug out nest in the sand. Well, we left them for a while but by late afternoon we decided that they should be moved to a safer and warmer spot. At night, the bank of the river would be cold and during the day they might be eaten by a crocodile or a big lizard. So, after a recue of the first born (we found her in a totally different spot than the rest of the litter) and a recue of the last born (this one rolled down the bank a ways and was still in the sack) we recued the entire litter by moving them to the big dog house. All nine seem to be doing well. Lydia is a trooper as she has had 3 litters in the last 15 months! If we have anything to say about it, we say this will be the last. Puppies however, are not hard to get rid of. We have already had requests for 5 of the nine so I am sure the other 4 will go fast. Let’s see if we fall in love with one to keep for our very own

Josiah turns 3!

Josiah had a big 3 year old birthday on Sunday. He received a special outfit from my mother (his grandmother ). He looked smart in his tie-dyed shirt and shorts. Then our really great friend that we met here brought a bag of toys and clothes for Josiah AND for the 2 babies. She and her husband have been a God send for us and for the children.

So Josiah had a great day: lots of hugs and kisses, new clothes, toys, shoes and a jacket, a nice walk (sometimes he was carried), and a big piece of birthday cake!!!! Happy Birthday Josiah!!! We love you lots!!!!!

School, Sports, Cool weather, the water…

Well, the kids have been back from their holiday and in school for one week. They are enjoying seeing each other and being back to their comfort in the village. Friends and food says a lot. School kicked off on Monday with the addition of 2 new teachers to replace 2 that are no longer here. The children were dressed in uniform and ready to go. We opened them with devotions, they said the pledges and sang a few songs including the national anthem. It was a nice morning and we are proud of the study they are doing and the work that the teachers put into their education.

Sports day already started and we found out the morning of the sports event. We still did not have vehicles to come to get all the kids so many started by foot as the vehicles made it back and forth to get them where they were in route. The girls played net ball (for the first time in competition), boys and girls soccer and were supposed to also play basketball but the other school did not have a team. They also practiced for volley ball but did not compete here this time. We tied in net ball, won girls soccer and lost boys soccer. Guess the boys should learn from the girls

The weather has turned cool in the evening, night and morning. The days are pleasant. I guess we would call this sweater or sweatshirt weather. The flowers and the sky is just beautiful. God’s creation is evident everywhere!!!

AND… the water is going down, down, down!!!!! The flood is OVER for another year!!!! Praise, Praise!!!!!!!

The boat can get it’s well deserved rest and it will not take us 8 hours to get groceries – going out in the boat, getting to the car, loading the car, unloading into the boat, parking the car and walking back because the boat is too heavy with groceries!! 8 hours reduced to 4 or 5!!! BIG!!!!! The water is not even running over the bridge!!!

…but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

Healthcare and First Aide Workshop at COZV

Yesterday and today we had a healthcare and first aide workshop to help the staff to better understand care for a child that is injured and also to prevent sickness and injury. It was led by our volunteer, Lena. Jonathan was a very good practice patient. Don’t worry, he is really fine!

Labor Day in Africa

Today is a national holiday in Africa - Labor DaySo, we decided we needed to do some manual labor!
Off to the garden we go!! After many hours and help from the outside staff and 4 older boys and a little help from the smaller boys, we made a ton of progress and we are going to town tomorrow to buy seeds!! YES!!! By July and August we will be eating lots of fresh veggies picked right from the garden.
AWESOME.

After we worked most of the day we decided we should have a different kind of fun. We found 4 OLD pumpkins in the garden so we thought we should use them for bowling balls.

SOOOO, we got empty coke bottles and the old pumpkins and set up a bowling lane. FUN!!!

Once the big boys were done, Josiah decided he should give it a try!!

The Water... STILL!!!!

We left for the Missionary conference in Brussels in the water (well, the boat). We traveled from boat to car (and had a safari on the road on the way to Botswana), 3 planes, 5 countries and 24 hours later, we arrived in Belgium! We came home in the water. BUT, the water is starting to go down!!! BIG PRAISE!!!

It is pretty interesting to plan trips when every time you go, you have to have a driver for the boat because we cannot dock the boat at the other end (where the car is). It would not be safe and we would likely come back and there would be no motor. The boat runs at 6:30 am and 5:30pm.

Other runs are more for emergency transport (like hospital runs and food runs on Monday and Thursday). The reason is that after every 3 trips we need to buy more petrol for the boat. This becomes quite expensive so being the penny pinching people that we are, we say “no” a lot to the “in-between” runs in the boat.

Even with the water going down, it might be several weeks before we can get out cars back to our village. The sand will be very wet and we could get stuck quite easily and not get out easily. Even the dogs are having trouble! Also, the bridge was sand so it is washed away.

You can see in the picture that there are bricks there but work will need to be done. I am sure that we will join with our neighbors to fix up the bridge and the road. Good relationship building, right? Good opportunity to witness and share the love of Christ.

Now that most of us have crossed the bridge in the water, we have been warned: There is a BIG crocodile so stay clear!! Well, NO more crossing for us until we can get better footing on ground instead of pushing, rushing water.

In spite of the challenges of the water, God continues to bless us with His grace and Glory. The sun sets in the boat are even more beautiful than from the shore. Thank you Jesus for reminding us that YOU are in charge and YOU are taking care of us and YOU are providing for our every need and YOU ARE!!!!

There is one body and one Spirit - just as you were called to one hope when you were called - one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one GOD and Father of ALL, who is over ALL and through ALL and in ALL! AMEN!! Ephesians 4:4-6

The Road is the River

Well, the water has come up around us. We are an island. We are using the boat to come and to go from the village. Trying to get all of the food for 59 children and staff into the village is a tight squeeze and takes 3 boat trips from the car. Well, at least if we do not get back any time soon, we will NOT be hungry!

Soccer from COZV

Two great weekends of soccer and hard training brought the COZV teams to great wins and a tough loss.
The girls competed and won a tough and exciting match against a team on the Botswana border. They went out with nerves and came in with confidence and a win. They sang the entire way home (over an hour trip).
Maybe the visit from a stranger helped them ???

By the last weekend, two matches were scheduled (one girls and one boys) and the road was flooded. Soooo, some started out on foot and some went by boat. We left at 9 in the morning and got home by 8 at night. It was quite the journey. Travis and I came back in by foot, in the dark, through the bush, through the water. Scarey but God kept us safe and we were glad to be home!

SORRY about how spread out the pictures are. I cannot get them to move anywhere!

Scarlet, the dog, followed us the whole way out of the village (since we were walking) so we just loaded her on the truck and she became our mascot dog that day :)

Busy Times

Our busy and hard working team of 2 left last week. Robby and Chico blessed our lives and many others during their short time here. They also worked very, very hard and accomplished a LOT!!! They helped to fix the water tank that was leaking water fast and requiring extra electricity (which costs us a lot of money) to keep it full and they created a traditional outdoor cooking area and wash area. They also funded the outdoor cooking pots that we will use to cook the pap over the wood fire. AWESOME!!!!

Several churches and a sports store supplied new soccer shoes, shin guards, jerseys, tape… sports equipment for soccer and track!!! AWESOME! I thought it was great that Mansfield supplied the jerseys because I am from that area of Pennsylvania. Go Mansfield!!!!

While Robby and Chico were here we had the first talent show of COZV since we have arrived. We did not have big sign up but we had a great evening of entertainment. • Three West Siders Dancers – (Martin, Djolo, Mwinda and Josiah)

ALL received prizes but the ones we had to participate in were taking the little girls (7) ballet to town and treat them to ice cream and dinner for the musicians (Nicky, Della, Albert, Martin and Djolo) They came for dinner on Saturday night. Good thing I got 2 roasts because these kids can eat!!! No leftovers for us!!! Taking the little girls to town was fun. They were knocking at our door at 7am on Saturday asking when we were leaving. Excitement for what we consider such a simple thing is so fun and such a blessing.

The little children (18) are coming for Bible Study at our house on Thursday afternoons at 4:30. They are very attentive and had some great participation and excitement! Along with the Bible Study they are being challenged to learn the books of the Bible and are excited to be successful. Candy is a good incentive I have to admit. No one needed an incentive to come to Bible Study however. They just knew that it was their special time and the big kids could not push them aside. Last week the study was on friendship and this week it is thankfulness.

We all enjoyed a bon fire and “fire cakes” (S’mores) that were sent from the states – Thank you Lisa!!!!.

YUMMMMY. Finger lickin good!

On Thursday we attended and participated in the celebration of a life, our employee, our friend, Sydney. We only knew him a short 5 months but during that short time he blessed our lives. He always had a big smile even during his illness. He always had a positive attitude and would say “I am going to be alright. I just have to get a little bit stronger.” He was a teacher and mentor to our children. We transported his body and several people in two 4X4’s on Thursday. We went WAY back in the bush, through the dirt, sand, trees and mud. Many people were there. We sat on the ground under the trees in Africa. The mom fell over when she entered and was crying very loudly. They helped her up to continue to where she should be sitting (on the ground). Lorna had an opportunity to get up and speak on behalf of Children of Zion Village. It was a spontaneous speech since they did not give us any ahead of time invitation. 22 of the children came and sang a song at the funeral and a song at the burial site. Once the funeral was over we got up and walked further into the bush to the burial site. The casket went via a canoe (which is a cut out tree here). The rest of us went on foot. Due to the flooding, we had to walk through some ankle deep water. The grave was already dug. There was a sermon and singing. Once the casket was put in the ground, we all could go and put a handful of dirt (sand in this case) in the grave. The tradition has it that everything that comes out of the ground or off of the ground goes back so they put all of the sticks and stones and trees back into the grave if they took them off of the ground. They build up a mound on the grave and we can all come a few at a time and get an artificial flower and stand around the grave. Then all kneel at the same time and poke their flower in the ground on the grave. All get up at the same time and then the next group comes. It creates a beautiful grave.

We thank God for the short life and Blessing that Sydney has been to us and others. He was 24 years old and will be remembered and missed by many but we trust that he is at home with our heavenly Father and in no more pain and discomfort. We look forward to seeing his smiling face again one day when we too are called home.

The river is rising but we feel confident that at this point since we have not had to evacuate that we will be safe to stay here. BIG PRAISE!!!! The water at the bridge is higher than we have seen it yet so we may have to start going in and out with the boat instead of the car but we really feel we will be able to stay in the village!!! We are so thankful for this.
The water has come through the sides of the road twice and some men have repaired it. One time a vehicle broke down the “sand wall” and today some children (not ours!) put holes in the sides. So, the water then comes pouring across the road. All is fixed tonight so we will see what tomorrow will bring.

Monday March 21 was the 21 year celebration of Independence for the country. We took a load of kids to the sports complex in town where they had a celebration. There were speeches and traditional dancing. All was great for the first couple of hours until the sky opened up and the rains came. We left by noon to get back to the village for our own celebration.

We used the new cooking area and pots and grilled chicken outside and cooked pap and “soup” to put on the pap. We moved the tables outside and had a wonderful picnic under the trees. We sang the national anthem and sang happy birthday and had a cake with 21 candles. All had a great time and we were very full for the rest of the day. Thanks again to Robby and Chico for their hard work on this cook area and the money to buy the cooking pots for outside! It is wonderful!!!!!

Projects underway and Sports competition excitement!

Our two volunteers are here and they are busy!! What a blessing they are and what hard work they are doing. They are working on building a traditional cooking area and a traditional washing area. The cook area will have a place for 2 fire pits and a roof. The braai for the meat is already there so they are adding on for the fire pits for cooking “pap” or “mealie” in a large cook pot over the flame.

After the walkway concrete was poured all the children were given the opportunity to initial the edge. They continue to look to see and show where their initials are.

The wash area will be concrete where they can scrub and wash their clothes by hand (they way they do in the villages). We hope to use this area this weekend and allow the kids to cook the adults a traditional African meal.

The water tank was leaking a lot of water and purchasing a new one was not something we could add to the budget so the staff and our volunteers took down the water tank. They taped the leak and worked and worked and finally (after the rope broke and the tank fell 2 times) they were able to return it to the high platform where it sits. So, instead of losing a gallon of water an hour, we might be losing a gallon of water a day!! BIG IMPROVEMENT!!!

Some of the children participated in a sports event on Monday. They competed against other children from other schools and in their age group. They performed hard and we are very proud of them. The ones that received first place will all compete on Saturday at Regional’s. Some of the second place winners may also get to compete. Congratulations to ALL and Good Luck on Saturday!!!

Our Beautiful Christmas Baby

You know that we received a beautiful baby girl on Christmas eve. For our first Christmas in Africa, we were thrilled. Well, now we are even more in love with this beautiful child. The River, The Water - Everywhere!

It is so interesting to watch the water rise in the river. What is even more interesting is how the water comes in from behind us as well as in the river "in front" of us. Each day there are changes. So that you can get a just a little sample of how it is, I am going to share pictures of how the land looked when we arrived back in October compared to how it looks now.

We just spent a wonderful, relaxing few days in Botswana!

We played our first tennis in Africa on Friday and Saturday!!!

We went on 2 safari’s – one boat, one jeep and we saw loads of animals including hundreds of elephants, hippos, antelopes, fish eagles, wart hogs, and many more!! God’s creation – AWESOME!!!

Don’t worry, if you support us, we do NOT expense our time away. That is under our own, personal budget. Thank you for your ongoing support so we can be with the children and minister and share the gospel of Jesus Christ to the children AND the people that we meet along the way!

The Waters are rising FAST!!! We have done some research and we are ready to have some fun with a not so fun situation - evacuation with 59 children to safe, dry land.
So, below are 6 sites that we have visited and we would like you to vote in the comments section of the blog.
We might as well have a good time and smile and laugh! We know that God will provide for our needs each and every day and we know that he will protect us and keep us safe!!!

Option one - a field that is fenced:

Option two: An established neighborhood where we would have to camp in the field:

Option four: a small building, lots of achohol bottles around the building. Fenced. Another camping option.

Option five: an open hall with a "courtyard" around it for camping.

Option six: A one hundren year old barn that we would have to help rennovate. It still smells like the pigs and chickens that lived there.

Our contanier has ARRIVED!

Well, today our container arrived. It was supposed to come yesterday, but you know, this is Africa.

The truck driver made it down our road and over the bridge (amazing) and then he pulled into our neighbors camp ground because he did not think he could come the rest of the way in. Well, our neighbor was not very excited about the big truck on his bricks. The plan was for us to come with our trailer and off load there. But, since he was not happy, we decided that was not a good idea. So the truck driver (Joshua) decided to come on in. It was great. He made it through and only took out one small tree. Then he made the turn to come to our house and the truck started sinking, and sinking, and sinking…

Well, the front tire was very deep in the mud and the back tires were not helping but they were sinking too. So, they starting digging and putting tree branches and wood planks and anything we could think of to leverage the truck. They even took the container off to lighten the load. Nothing was working.

Sooo… some ventured out to our neighbors knowing that we lived close to the brick making company and that he had good, big machinery.
Well, he came over to look at the situation and of course, “for a price” he would come back with his tractor. The tractor pulled the truck out but it was not the first try.
We saw the wheels of the tractor sinking and it became concerning, but God was present and with us the whole time. The truck was out and we unloading with the help of our strong boys.

Milinga (one of our deaf boys) got instructions to put the container back on the truck. He was thrilled with this opportunity that the driver (Joshua) gave him. Joshua also gave him his South Africa Soccer wrist bracelet. We had the opportunity to share about how God is working in the village and His love for each of us and his protection that he gives and the needs that He provides for.

Although the unloading took longer than it should have and there were many complications, God was present and it gave us an opportunity to share about His love and His faithfulness. We now have new “trucker” friends that we will visit next time we head toward the coast. We know that God will Bless them and protect them as the drive from journey to journey. We are thankful for them and the service and love that they showed here today.

In ALL things GIVE THANKS!!! Rain, Flood, Truck Drivers, MUD, 59 children, Family, and Friends!!!!!

I don’t think that we introduced you to Wally. Well, Wally is our new Wart Hog friend. No, he does not live with us but we did meet him one time a while back ago and never introduced him so, meet Wally!

One thing that I know that we told you and that is THE RIVER IS RISING!! They say it is twice as high as before. We are beginning flood planning.

We also plan to start making hundreds of sand bags this week. It won’t keep the water out but it will help it not to rush in (depending on how high it really gets!) We are praying for the rains to STOP but if we must leave we pray for a safe and “reasonable” place to go and for safety and good health.

Saturday we had a great day with our children. We only have the pickup truck that can get through the road now so Travis had to make several trips to take 49 of our athletes to the sports complex in town. They had a great day of competition started with devotion given by Travis about Christian athletes and dedication to run the life that God has given you to run. Train hard and give your best at all things that you do so as to do it for the Lord.

They competed against themselves (this time) and it included foot races, long jump, shot put, and discus throw.

We took lunch for them so they had a break and lunch and went back at it. The day concluded because it started to RAIN!!! In the morning it was beautiful and sunny and some of us became sunburn and then the clouds let loose and the wind picked up and everyone got wet and cold. When you ride wet in the back of a pickup, it is even colder.

THEN, the truck got stuck in the road. Lesson learned: do not slow down and stop for cows crossing the road!!!

God sent a man to pull out the truck. Interesting, it is a man we see all the time when walking the road and we always wave and he NEVER waves or smiles or looks. Now, he comes to rescue us from trouble!! PERFECT!!!! Many now have colds and allergies. The colds had already started but the rain and cold did not help the situation. Please be in prayer for the health concerns.

Last Wednesday we had a visit from another government group, The Parliamentary. They interviewed the managers and us, the directors. They toured the facility. They were VERY impressed! They said the place was cleaner than most and they were impressed with the children as they gave a little musical performance. The ladies LOVED the 2 baby girls, Liseli and Nsala. We are excited about these people and pray this will bring us some much needed assistance with the transition of the children and well as further education financial assistance as well as flood planning.

This Wednesday we presented at the governors meeting with a whole room full of council members. We presented the emergency situation of flooding here at the village and we pleaded for help to find safe grounds to move our children and also assistance with things such as tents, sanitation, toilets, water and food. We also picked up 300 bags for sand and will start the work on these immediately. We will need to return for more but this will give us a start.

We took the baby for her routine shots. We told her to tell her sister Nsala that she was going to town. She was worn out after her big town trip but she did great and was very good!

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

Back at the Village

It has been a busy week in the village. The children are back and school has started. Most were excited about getting started back to school but, of course, not all. We are blessed with a volunteer who is teaching kindergarten. She will make a huge impact on these young lives and we are grateful for her and her willingness to spend 7-12 each morning with 7 young ones. Yes, this can be a challenge but what a blessing. I bet these little ones will remember her forever! I am pretty old and I still remember my kindergarten teacher so I would say she made an impact on my life.

We have had some challenges since the children have returned from their villages but rules are in place and they are “coming around.” We were proud to see the older ones out Saturday morning doing their own laundry and hanging up on the additional clothes lines that were added this week for their use. A couple of them learned that you cannot put the reds with the whites especially if they are new clothes from the USA.

We have been working to get 5 learners ready to go “away” for school. Once they are ready for the 10th grade, we are not registered here to teach that grade so they go and board at schools in the area. We have 3 different schools for 5 children so we have continued our learning process of what they need to do to get in, what they need to bring and when they need to be there. Since there are no lists provided, we have learned “the hard way” I afraid. So, we are making a list so that next time we are more prepared, although each school is a little different. Sunday we will spend quite a bit of time dropping everyone off since this is the “report” day and they will start school on Monday.
Please pray for these learners as they enter into a different environment. We pray they will become friends with the right people, be good Christian leaders, ask God for wisdom in decision making and be successful in their studies.

This week our power was out for almost 24 hours. Well this really wouldn’t be so bad except everything in the freezer starts to defrost and the water began to run across our floor. Then after about 6 hours we discovered that we had NO water because the power supply keeps the water pumping up from the river into the filters. So, no water to drink, to flush, to wash dishes, do laundry, all of the things that we use water for that we take for granted. What to do??
Well, the river is right here and the water keeps rising so let’s get water from the river. Of course, we would not drink it before it was boiled but we could not boil it because we did not have power.

Challenges? They make us stronger and remind us to rely on God because He will provide and He will give us wisdom and He will never leave us. Today, we have power and we enjoying the water and the coffee never tasted better (both because we had hot water and because our friend Patti sent us French Vanilla Creamer - THE BEST)!

Please pray for the rains all around the area to STOP. It will be a miracle if we do not have to evacuate with our 59 children as the river is rising right before our eyes! The road in and out of the village is difficult and will, in time, be impassable.

We Praise God for all of the Blessings and Challenges that He sends our way!
We are thankful to be in Africa and for your prayers, support, encouragement and LOVE!

Christmas at COZV, January 9, 2010

Sunday January 9th was the day that we celebrated Christmas here at Zion Village. The children have just returned from visiting their villages and were excited to see each other and have a Christmas party. Now, tomorrow they start back to school and I cannot say they are so excited about that!
Sunday started with a wonderful worship service led by Travis. He reinforced why we celebrate Christmas and the REAL meaning of Christmas. Although we all like to receive gifts, we have already received the Greatest Gift of all and we need to continue to give thanks each day for the gift of our Savior Jesus Christ.

After service the children were instructed to go to their rooms. During this time we moved all of the boxes of gifts from our house to the children’s home and organized them under the tree. We also move in the new furniture and placed it in the main room. THEN, we changed into our RED SUITS!!! OK, we would have never imagined that we would be wearing such an outfit. God has a wonderful sense of humor, most of the time! During this time the braii (barbeque) was cooking and there was good chicken and sausage nearly ready for lunch!

Once we were “ready” the bell was heard and the children rushed to the main room. They sat on the benches after some needed to find their name on a gift under the tree. Some came up to “bother” Santa but since he is a jolly old guy, it was all fun!

We sang some Christmas carols including Joy to the World. Then the names of the children were called, youngest to oldest, and they came to receive their gift. No one was told to “open” or to wait but they tended to wait and then the tearing began! It was Great! They were excited, appreciative and had a great time opening and seeing what gift was given especially for them.

Even new furniture was tried out by each of the children (and staff too!)

Watches!!!??? You mean I have to be on time???!!! Uggg oh!!! Uncle Travis, could you set this to the right time for me?

After gift opening was a wonderful lunch that many were involved in preparing! Chicken, Sausage, rice with sauce and potato salad. Then came the home baked cookies!!!

Thank you to all who played a role in contributing Christmas gift to these wonderful children!!!!!!

You are a gift from GOD and we appreciate YOU!!! May God Bless you for your partnership in this ministry in Namibia to care for these children!

We've Got KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The music is LOUD!!!! There is screaming and laughing and storytelling and many knocks at our door. OUR CHILDREN ARE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have had a busy week of picking up kids. Too bad we don’t have a BIG bus so we could get most of them at the same time. It took 4 trips and there are still 7 that are not back.

Both of our cars were in the shop. The day before the pickup, the van (which was most important for these trips) was fixed. Just in God’s perfect timing to get food for the children Wednesday and pick them up Thursday. (These are a few pictures of the children with their family/ relative in their villages.)

The first day was very successful and we got several from far away and were still able to do a few more trips to villages that were close. We started at 7am and ended the transport about 8pm. Dinner and bed were great after that! That got us to about 44 children. It was a LONG Thursday that included a trip to the emergency room (since it was after hours) for one of the teachers on staff. He was so sick he could hardly walk. Please pray for healing for him.

Friday started with a 6am pick up. This trip was the longest in distance.
All WAS going great until the last stop for kids.

Then the TIRE WAS FLAT!! There was not a spare and not a jack!!!!

A call came to the village. Travis had gone with Jenny because there was not room for Lorna and all of the kids. So, Elton (the one staff member that has a car) “happened” to drive that day as he often rides his bike. He took Lorna to Ed’s (the mechanic) to pick up the other pickup truck that was JUST READY THAT DAY!!! So, you don’t think that God’s timing is perfect???? This is only one perfect example that His timing IS perfect! We got the car, the spare tire and the jack and started on the long drive to meet the broken down van. They were VERY happy to see a tire to fix the problem.

We had not of on looking “help.”

All is good, all are safe and we are on the road again. We arrive back to the village before dark!!! Praise God for the cars being fixed on time, no one was hurt and all are back safe!!!!

We will have some hospital visits next week for children that need some care. Please pray for the children as they return to the village as well as the staff; for respect, appreciation, love, patience, kindness and good health. May we do everything to glorify God and give Him thanks in ALL things!

Tomorrow is our Christmas with the children!!! We will have a Christmas service, songs, gifts and food!!! Fun for all (especially those 2 that will be dressing up in a red suit!!! ) Come and join us if you can! You are always welcome!

Happy New Year Around the Globe!!!!

Happy New Year from our village to yours (OH, ok, our house to yours)!!!

Here is just a bit of an idea of what it looked like in town New Year’s Eve day (and about the same on Christmas Eve day). The picture really doesn’t tell it, but there were people EVERYWHERE!!!!!!

We did have a calm evening but I can’t really say it was quiet as we could hear the music playing in several different directions. We felt the importance of staying home to ensure no break-ins as well as safety for us. We had a great time because we had a big envelope of Christmas cards from our Norcross church family to open.
Now look, we have gift of special messages under our Christmas tree!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE AND THOUGHTFULNESS!!!!! These cards were wonderful and are so extra special (as you are) to us!!!

This morning something that was cool was we skyped into a “PJ” traditional party that is in our “old neighborhood” in the states. It was 6:50am here so we had NY with them as the ball was just dropping at midnight!!! It was awesome as they held the computer in the air so we could see everyone and hear the big Happy New Year wishes!!!

It was raining but we headed out with one of our night staff. We were taking him back to his village but he also invited us to come to a traditional “breaking out”. It is where the girl is kept inside from age 15-18. They teach her about life lessons. Then, this morning when she “comes out” there is traditional music and drums and it is a big party. We thought it might be something interesting to see. Well, our most reliable car, the 4X4 broke down just inside their village. It was raining. It is the ONLY car that WAS working, it is New Year’s day! So, there was a God send. A person that knows cars very well. He said that the master cylinder was “gone.” NOT GOOD!! But he worked a while under the hood and on the clutch (that was not working at all) and we were able to drive back to our village. We could not shift out of first gear but at least we made it back. Now another car to repair. I would say that we are not going anywhere today or tomorrow. We pray that we have the van back Monday as we will start picking up our kids the middle of the week.

We continue to give God thanks and glory for what He does for us each day. As we reflect on 2010, it brings to mind the endless list of things that we had to accomplish before coming to COZV.
We know that only because of God’s grace and the way that He was preparing the way for us, before we even came here, that we made it through everything that happened in the 2010 journey. We are thankful that you are on this journey with us and we pray that you will accept His blessing for 2011.

Ephesians 4: 22-24 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self…and to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

The Second Day of Christmas

We had a wonderful church service with God speaking through Travis on the Good Shepherd and how following and listening to the shepherd ties in with the birth and Christ and the Christmas day we just celebrated. After the service the “big boys” went on a long walk so the little boy, Josiah, was not happy so we went on a short walk with him and the youngest, newest baby Liseli. It gave our two staff a quiet opportunity (since Nsala was sleeping) to clean and prepare lunch for the children and gave us a nice opportunity to continue to bond with them.

We had a thunderstorm in the afternoon. It was loud with lots of lightning and thunder and just some rain. We are thankful when it rains (and not too much to flood the road) during the day instead of during the night. We used to like rain at night but then we are unable to hear sounds that might alert us to people breaking into the house. So, rain in the day and evening and day is best. We continue to work on electrical issues to help light up the property and that may help to keep us safe. We continue to ask you for prayers of protection and peace at night so that we can rest and know that God will keep us and the property safe and quiet.

We also took the children on the first boat ride of the season. We expect there will be several more since the river is high for this time of year and we are told that we WILL be flooded come March. Please pray that the river remains under flood stage for us as we become surrounded by it and become an island. The “sand bridge” we have to cross when we leave each day is the first to go usually. Just watch out for the HIPPOS!!!

Christmas Day in Africa

This has been a Christmas to remember in Africa! From Christmas celebrations with the children from the feeding center and staff to our staff Christmas party to delivering Christmas gifts of food and toys to the nearby village to cooking Christmas dinner for the children that are still in the village with us and 2 staff.

The two baby girls came of course and they were so sweet.

We shared some stories and we learned some more about African traditions that we can implement next year. Since most of the food was gone, I would say they liked it!

After dinner we played a few games around the table.

Today was hot but now the thunder is going and it is not raining but it has cooled down. It still amazes me that it is December and there are so many beautiful flowers around our house. I can say I don’t miss the cold and God knew what He was doing when He called me to Africa!

Even the dogs had a taste of Christmas dinner AND took time to smell the flowers!

The girls were really worn out after a big afternoon!

Merry CHRISTmas!!!!!

We received our Christmas gift today. A beautiful 3 month old baby girl who we picked up this morning and will be living with us and raised to know and love the Lord! What a blessing for our first Christmas in Africa.

NSala might be worried that she, the youngest at 9 months, is no longer the baby. She will have to share her clothes and that is just not something that girls like to do. Look at this, she is already having to help with the laundry but she is such a happy girl, she just goes with the pace!

We are having the children that did not go back to a village to visit relatives and staff over to our house for Christmas dinner tomorrow. Might be interesting but will be a blessing!

Christmas Celebrations abound!!! Remember the Reason for the Season!!!

There are many exciting things happening here at Children of Zion Village!!! There is never a dull day and we learn several things each day. We are the full swing of Christmas and hope that you are too! To those of you that have sent or posted pictures of snow, we are enjoying them. It is odd to be so hot this time of year but at least we don’t need so many clothes and can still wear our shorts and short sleeved shirts.

From Christmas decorating, cookie baking, food preparation and parties to gathering fire wood, plowing gardens, a bon fire, a safari, a break in, mud in the road, several children leaving to go with relatives in their villages for the holiday, picking fresh corn from the garden for dinner, the water pump breaking, a pipe in the children’s home breaking, snakes on the property, and today the boat went out on the river for the first time in many months.

We had a great time with the children decorating the children’s home and putting up the tree and doing what they have known as tradition. We did the tree, beads, lights and “generic” ornaments. Then they said that we should take one evening to call each name of the child to come an put “their” ornament on the tree. This means the ornament that has their name on it. Also, this is the evening to put on the STAR. So, we did that the night before some of them started to leave for their villages for the holiday. It was a special time and we have learned the tradition of something they have enjoyed from the past.

We then also decorated our own little tree in our house. Since we did not receive our shipment (YET), we are doing without some of our special traditional decorations.

What is missed the most is a nativity scene that Lorna’s father made before he passed away. He was an exceptional wood worker and we have several memories of him and one is the manger scene that he crafted in wood. It will be extra special next year. We even have our first 2 Christmas cards from the states and they are standing next to our Christmas tree. Thank You!

There was a request to do a bon fire so we did that before many of the children left for holiday. Marshmallows were a big hit and several bags were consumed. We could just apologize to the night workers!

We took some time to help Mafuta (the feeding center where we take food each Monday) to gather fire wood so they could prepare the food over the traditional open fire.

Travis drove WAY back in the bush but we were blessed by these wonderful people that volunteer their time to help out children that otherwise may not have food for the day.

One day Lorna went with a few of our girls to help plow their garden to plant Maize (corn). Again, what a blessing working side by side with children and adults.

Torie, a 3 month volunteer had a desire to go on a Safari prior to leaving Africa. So, we took her and 4 children to Chobe National Park in Botswana on our first “official” safari. We saw lots of animals but thousands of elephants!! There were challenges at the border with the people thinking that we were taking the children to the States but, after a few calls, we were successful getting through.

Taking our children was rather difficult. We needed several trips to transport them successfully. Dropping them off with people we did not know and looking at their faces made us apprehensive. The older ones seemed fine and the younger ones were excited but then they just looked scared. We pray they are doing well, having fun with relatives and making good choices and staying safe. We pray they might be a witness to others in the village where they are.

We invited the children and staff from the Mafuta feeding center where we take food each Monday to come and celebrate in a Christmas party. Without God providing you to support this effort, these children might not eat. We did lots of cooking, baking and transporting. The party was great except for the rain. Everyone had good food and received a gift which they really appreciated. They had fun playing games outside before the rains came. What a blessing these children and staff were to us!

After the party with Mafuta we had a party for our staff. So, we had chicken on the brai, sausages, potatoe salad, maccaroni salad, carrot salad and bean salad. Then at our staff party we enjoyed the home made Christmas cookies! It was not a traditional celebration to us but it was very nice and everyone had a great time. We were exhaused but we know that God blessed us and the people that participated.

Next: who knows. What we do know: We will celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 25th. One of the kids has requested pizza! Stay tuned...

Children go home for the holiday.

We just came in from excitement in the river. There were hippos right behind us but in the river, not in our yard (yet). Since it is 9:30 at night, we don’t have a good enough light to see them really well but we could see them some. They seemed to be fighting at times and were very loud with the noise/snort and breathing they make.

When we looked up at the sky, it was like a giant Christmas tree full of while lights. The galaxy is just incredible. There is no white light to dim the glory of each star in the sky. It made us think of the first Christmas and the star in the sky that led the way to the Christ child. We had just finished decorating our little Christmas tree as we are about to celebrate our first Christmas in Africa.

Hippos, bright stars, mosquitoes, heat, rain, and lots of children to love. Our Christmas will be different but the meaning and the reason to celebrate and be thankful will never change.

I do have to back up a bit. We have been so busy I have to catch you up (using the abridged version of the last 2 weeks. The end of school celebration was GREAT! There was lots of shopping trips to buy the suggested food and awards. There was a lot of cooking: chicken and sausages on the Braii (barbeque), potato salad, macaroni salad and lots of homemade cookies by Lorna. Travis helped by encouraging and tasting each type to ensure that no one would become ill.

We had 10 guests from outside of our village. They were so thankful to be here and said that they had never been invited to anything like this here. There were people from the government offices and chiefs from the local tribes. The children were well behaved and did a wonderful job with their performance.

We presented certificates for best achievements in academics, behavior and neatness. We did have to have the celebration inside because of the day starting with rain but luckily we are blessed with a big room to make it happen. It was a delightful day and we were very proud parents and we were also proud of the teachers and all of the staff that worked so hard to make the day a success.

Sunday we had a great service with the lighting of 2 advent candles.

After the service the children (along with us) put up the tree and started the decorating process at the children’s home. We had the Christmas music playing and it was a fun time. The tree keeps looking better and better as we make additional/new ornaments to add to the tree.

This week has been full of getting the kids packed up and ready to go to their villages for the holiday. There seem to be a lot of things needed prior to leaving including updates on medical visits. Yesterday and today all of the kids that live rather close were taken to spend time with family (aunts, grandmothers, sisters, brothers and some moms or dads). I have to say that I have only been here for 2 months but it was very hard to leave a child at a place where we do not know the people and you can tell that they are excited but yet scared. One of the most touching times was when one of the grandmothers saw her grandson. She was so excited and kissed and hugged him over and over. She had not seen him for quite a while and it was such a joyous moment. I have a photo posted but it just does not begin to tell the story (as most pictures really don’t).

Saturday we took a larger than “normal” group of children to town to do their last minute shopping before they leave. The next group will leave either Monday or Tuesday. They go to the western caprivi which is quite far and will take the whole day to transport them and return. We will then be left with only 7 children. WOW, will it be quite. BUT on the 17th we are inviting the children and staff from the feeding center here to have a Christmas celebration including worship, games, lunch and gifts. Yes, there is a lot to do to prepare but we will have a great time and we pray that someone will be touched because of this time together with our staff and the children that are still here. More cookies to bake!! Anyone that wants to come on over and help is more than welcome. You can even help Travis with the taste testing!

Instead of doing a movie tonight, we are going built a big fire and roasted marshmallows. Stay tuned for the pictures. With only 38 kids left, it seems rather quite. Never thought that I would say it was quite with “just” 38 children.

This weekend our volunteer, Torie, leaves to return to the states. She has been here for 3 months (longer than us) and has not gone on her long awaited safari. So, Sunday we are taking her to Botswana on a Safari and we will take a few children with us. No doubt it will be a great time. We just pray that our car holds up so we can get the kids back and transport them to their villages on Monday and/or Tuesday. There is a new volunteer that is coming in January and staying for 6 months. We are thankful for the help to us, the ministry to the children and any talent or skill they bring and teach to the children that volunteers bring.

Please pray for our children and their families as they visit that they would stay safe, make wise decisions, remember that Jesus loves them and will always be with them.

Please pray that they might be a good Christian influence on their family and can show and teach them about the love of Christ especially during this special season.

Please pray for all of our health and safety as we travel and fellowship.

Please pray for our families as they will have Christmas and for us as we also will have Christmas without our families in the USA.

We pray that you would continue to remember the reason for the season and in the business of this time, stop and remember the promise of Christmas and how much God loves you and that He will never leave you or forsake you!
